What your child learns, stage by stage

Each stage takes about 5 weeks at 3 lessons a week.

1. Stage 1

   Reads three- and four-letter words made from the first 12 sounds.

   • 12 letter sounds: s, a, t, p, m, n, i, d, o, g, c, k
   • VC word blends such as at, ap, in, on, ip and it
   • First sight words

2. Stage 2

   Reads words of four to five letters.

   • New sounds: h, b, u, le, e, l, f, ck and qu
   • CVC words
   • The CK rule and the qu rule
   • Sight words

3. Stage 3

   Blends and reads words of five to six letters.

   • All 26 letter sounds
   • Digraphs: ch, sh, th and ng
   • Bossy r (/ar/)
   • Sight words

4. Stage 4

   Blends and reads words of six to seven letters.

   • Long vowels: ai, ee, igh, oa and oo
   • Sight words

5. Stage 5

   Reads words of six to eight letters.

   • Magic e
   • Diphthongs: ou, ow, oa, oi and oy
   • Alternate sounds: ai, ay, ea, ie and y
   • Sight words
