What your child learns, stage by stage

Each stage takes about 5 weeks at 3 lessons a week.

1. Stage 1

   Reads and writes words of up to five letters.

   • All 26 letter sounds
   • The CK rule, the Floss rule and the qu rule
   • Short vowel sounds: a, e, i, o and u
   • Sight words

2. Stage 2

   Reads words of up to seven letters.

   • Long vowel sounds: ai, ee, igh, oa and oo
   • Digraphs: ch, sh, th and ng
   • Magic e
   • Sight words

3. Stage 3

   Reads words of up to eight letters.

   • Bossy r
   • More vowel sounds, such as ou, ow, oi and oy

4. Stage 4

   Reads words of up to ten letters, and age-appropriate storybooks.

   • Alternate sounds for long vowels
   • A review of the whole course
